Sarah Burton to step down from Alexander McQueen: Designer who made Kate Middleton’s dress leaves company after more than two decades – as brand praises her ‘exceptional vision’

Sarah Burton is stepping down as creative director of Alexander McQueen after more than 25 years at the company.

Mrs Burton, who is best known for designing Kate Middleton’s wedding dress,  joined the firm in 1996 and became creative director in 2010.

The brand praised her ‘exceptional vision and creativity’ as it confirmed its spring/summer 2024 show in Paris on September 30 would be her last.

Mrs Burton said: ‘I am so proud of everything I’ve done and of my incredible team at Alexander McQueen.

‘I am looking forward to the future and my next chapter and will always carry this treasured time with me.’

Her departure has prompted speculation that she could set up her own label.

She created an intricate ivory wedding gown with an 8ft train which Kate wore in 2011 – and Mrs Burton became one of the princess’s favoured designers.

She dressed her for Harry and Meghan’s wedding and in June this year, Kate looked radiant in a red McQueen dress at Royal Ascot.

In addition to Princess Kate’s outfits for special occasions, she has also favoured the British fashion house for stylish, chic looks as she carries out royal engagements – and even family days out.

Indeed one of the royal’s most stylish looks, her brilliant white suit with sharp tailored lines, was designed by McQueen.
