QUICK TIP

Trademark disclaimer: These treats refer to some trademarked brands: Oreos, Reese’s, Hershey Huggs and Kisses, Twizzlers, Rolos, and M&M’s. We use these names for two reasons. 1) They’re high-quality products that we use in our test kitchens and 2) they create instant name recognition to illustrate steps in the recipe process. We respect trademarks and branding!

Easy Halloween Treats Ingredient Breakdown

Here’s a rundown of all the ingredients for these treats, along with handy hints for each:

  • Oreo Thins cookies: Grab the chocolate-creme variety if you can find them. They bring a sleek, dark look that’s perfect for both witch hats and bat wings. And, for the bat bites, stick to the THIN Oreos; their thicker counterparts are a bit too heavy for the Reese’s cups.
  • Cream cheese frosting: If you’re up for it, whip up our favorite homemade cream cheese frosting for that rich flavor and creamy texture. However, if you’re going store-bought, try the bakery section for freshly made options. If not, the tub varieties will work just as well.
  • White chocolate: Quality matters here. For that perfect melt and rich taste, go for a good brand.
  • Chocolate candy kisses: Your choice of flavor can add a twist! Think about using “Hugs” for a fun color variation on the witch hats.
  • Food coloring: Gel-based colors are your best bet for achieving those bright, vivid colors.
  • Halloween/festive sprinkles: Seasonal sprinkles are often available in stores, but if not, online is a great place to look.
  •  Reese’s Miniature Cups: Freshness is crucial! Opt for a newly opened pack to avoid cracking when paired with pretzels. A quick tip: Chill these in the fridge prior to use to keep them firm and prevent melting or smudging during assembly.
  • Pretzel sticks and pretzel snaps or twists: Twists are our pick for monster eyes. For the witch’s brooms, grab miniature pretzel sticks.

Ingredients, continued

  • Pull-apart Twizzlers: Freshness is the name of the game. A new pack ensures they’re soft and pliable which is a must for securing them around the pretzel!
  • Rolos: Fresh candies are best. When baked, older Rolos might not hold up as well and are more prone to crumbling.
  • M&M’s candies: Seasonal bags are a hit, but if you can’t find them, use regular packs and sort out colors that match your theme.
  • Edible candy eyeballs: Size matters. Aim for miniature eyes for bats and the larger variety for monster eyeballs. This assorted size pack is perfect when making multiple of these easy Halloween Treats!

QUICK TIP

Wondering about those edible eyes? Check the baking aisle of local grocery stores, usually by cupcake supplies. Craft stores like Hobby Lobby or JoAnn’s Fabrics have them too. For a hassle-free option, online shopping is always a win.

Tips For These Treats

Here are some tips to ensure your Easy Halloween Treats come out spook-tacular:

  • Preparation is key: Before you start, set out all the ingredients. This way, you can quickly assemble each treat without searching for what you need next.
  • Chilling is crucial: If your candies, especially the chocolate ones, start getting melty, pop them in the fridge for a bit.
  • For perfect piping: If you don’t have a piping bag, a zipper-top plastic bag with the corner snipped off works just as well. Make sure the cut is tiny to maintain control.
  • Handling Oreos: When breaking Oreos in half for the Bat Bites, do so gently to avoid crumbling. A table knife slid between the halves does wonders in making the separation easier.
  • Monitor the oven: When softening Rolos on the pretzels, keep a close eye on them. There can be a lot of variation from oven to oven! The aim is to soften, not melt them.
  • Assembly-line approach: If you’re making large quantities, set up an assembly line. Lay out all your Oreos, then pipe all the frosting, place all the kisses, and finish with the sprinkles. This will speed up the process and give a more uniform look to your treats.
  • Get the kids involved: These are fun and easy recipes that kids can participate in. Let them handle tasks like unwrapping, sprinkling, or placing candies.

Fun Presentation Ideas

  • Spooky platters: Use platters or trays covered with fake spider webs. Place Halloween treats on top of cut pieces of parchment paper or in cupcake liners.
  • Edible graveyard: Create a graveyard with crumbled chocolate cookies as the “dirt.” Plant the Witch’s Hats and other treats in this “soil” and garnish with gummy worms for an added creepy touch.
  • Haunted cupcake stand: Use a cupcake stand–but give it a haunted vibe! Wrap it in orange and black ribbons, fake spider webs, or add Halloween-themed stickers and decals. Place these easy Halloween treats on top of cut pieces of parchment paper or in cupcake liners.
  • Cauldron bowls: Use small cauldrons (available at party stores during the Halloween season) to serve the treats. You can place some green cotton candy at the base to give the illusion of a witch’s potion.
  • Glowing display: Place treats on a tray lined with white parchment paper and use small, safe LED lights underneath to give the treats a mysterious glow.
  • Mummy wrap: Place treats in small boxes and wrap them like mummies using white streamers. Add googly eyes on top!
  • Candy corn layers: In a clear glass bowl, layer candies like candy corn at the bottom, then place your treats on top. This adds color and a festive touch.

VARIATIONS

Feel free to get creative! Use different flavored Oreos, a different flavor frosting, colored sprinkles, alternative candy flavors, or even add some additional Halloween-themed edible decorations like candy spiders.

Instructions

  • WITCHES HATS: Divide the frosting into two bowls. Dye one bowl green and the other orange. Transfer each colored frosting to separate zipper-top plastic bags. Remove air, seal, and snip off a corner. Pipe a generous dollop of frosting in the middle of each Oreo cookie. Gently press an unwrapped chocolate kiss into the frosting. Optionally, add sprinkles around the frosting base.

  • WITCHES BROOM: Turn Reese’s Cups upside down. Push a pretzel stick into the center of each cup. Pull apart Twizzlers and cut each strand into thirds. Wrap one piece around the pretzel where it meets the Reese’s cup, secure, and trim the excess.

  • BAT BITES: Prepare Reese’s Cups by unwrapping each one. Separate Oreo cookies and scrape off the frosting. Break each Oreo in half to form bat wings (be patient here; a lot will break!) Melt white chocolate chips in the microwave in bursts of 25 seconds, stirring in between each burst until melted and smooth. Transfer to a zipper-top plastic bag, snip off a corner, and pipe small dots on the Reese’s for the bat wings. Attach one Oreo half to each side of the Reese’s Cup to resemble wings. Pipe a small amount of chocolate below the wings and secure to edible eye candies to the Reese’s Cup.

  • MONSTER EYES: Preheat oven to 250°F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Arrange pretzels on the sheet and place an unwrapped Rolo on each. Bake for 2-4 minutes, or until the chocolates are soft but not melted. Immediately after removing from the oven, press M&M’s and large edible eyeballs into the Rolos. Let candies set at room temperature or in the fridge for about an hour or until the chocolate hardens.

Recipe Notes

Oreo THINS cookies: Stick to the THIN Oreos; their thicker counterparts are a bit too heavy for the Reese’s cups.
Reese’s Miniature Cups: A quick tip: Chill these in the fridge prior to use to keep them firm and prevent melting or smudging during assembly.
Edible candy eyeballs: Size matters. Aim for miniature eyes for bats and the larger variety for monster eyeballs. This assorted size pack is perfect when making multiple of these easy Halloween Treats!
